While our boat's engine are working very hard to maintain the position against the strong current in the middle of the channel, I see a small boat doing the same thing on the right side in front of Bo Cho Island. But the difference is the small one did it with the power of only two tireless arms.

Then I notice more boats, from one to two, three and four, some of which has a little child on it. 'Where are you going ? Can you really do it ?' I think.

It is not easy to sail the boat against a very strong current like this, not just a boat with only paddles, but even with a large engine like ours. For a while, I sit looking at the relative position between our boat, the small boats and the landmark on the island, sometime it seem that we are swept back quite far.

ระหว่างที่เรือของเรากำลังต้องเร่งเครื่องต้านกระแสน้ำ เพื่อให้สามารถลอยลำอยู่กลางช่องแคบได้นั้น ทางกราบขวาของเรือด้านเกาะโบโช ผมเพิ่งเห็นเรือน้อยลำหนึ่งก็กำลังทำในสิ่งเดียวกัน ต่างกันเพียงแต่เรือลำเล็กๆ นั้น ลอยลำอยู่ได้ด้วยกำลังของสองแขนที่คัดพายอย่างไม่รู้จักเหน็ดหนื่อย

สักพักผมก็สังเกตเห็นจำนวนเรือมากขึ้น จากหนึ่งเป็นสอง สามและสี่ บางลำมีเด็กตัวน้อยนั่งมาด้วย 'จะไปไหนกัน..จะไหวเหรอนี่' ผมนึกในใจ

ในกระแสน้ำที่ค่อนข้างเชี่ยว อย่าว่าแต่จะพายเรือทวนนำ้ด้วยกำลังแขนเลย แม้แต่เรือที่มีเครื่องยนต์ขนาดใหญ่อย่างเรายังไม่ง่ายเลย ผมนั่งมองระยะสัมพัทธ์ระหว่างเรือของเรา เรือลำน้อย และตำแหน่งของหมายบนเกาะอยู่พักใหญ่ บางขณะเหมือนเราต่างกำลังถูกพัดถอยหลังกลับไปไกลเลยด้วยซ้ำ

Nearly an hour, finally we move into our lifeboat heading for the shore. Those little boats, some go back ashore, some sail to our big boat.

"They'll enjoy canned drinks and candies as their rewards"  The crew said.

Is this a show ?  No..  ..I think it's a real life.

เกือบชั่วโมง ในที่สุด เราก็ลงเรือเล็กเพื่อจะขึ้นฝั่ง ในขณะเรือน้อยเหล่านั้น บางลำก็กลับเข้าฝั่ง แต่บางลำพายมาเทียบเรือใหญ่ของเรา 

"พวกเด็กจะได้น้ำอัดลมกระป๋องกับขนมเป็นรางวัล" ลูกเรือบอก

ตกลงนี่เป็นการแสดงหรือ ไม่นะ ผมว่านี่คือชีวิตจริง

The fisherman village on the Bo Cho Island in front bombards my head with words ..settlement, nomad, homeless, permanent, temporary, landowner.. All of these pop up because of contradictory feelings in my mind when thinking of the people being called in Myanmar as Salone, mixed with Orang Laut and called by Thais as Sea People, but they call themselves with their own language..Moken.

In the past, these people had the boats as their home sailing from one island to another, from Mergui Archipelago here down to Surin Islands in Thailand. The way of life without settlement made them unable to claim ownership over land and water in this region although they've been here before any people. The old islands' names around here in their language are the good evidence.

ภาพหมู่บ้านชาวประมงบนเกาะโบโชตรงหน้า ทำให้ผมคิดถึงคำหลายๆ คำสลับไปสลับมาในหัว ..การตั้งถิ่นฐาน เร่ร่อน คนไร้บ้าน ถาวร ชั่วคราว เจ้าของที่.. คำทั้งหมดเหล่านี้ผุดขึ้นมาเพราะความรู้สึกย้อนแย้งในใจ เมื่อนึกถึงคนกลุ่มหนึ่งที่ชาวเมียนมาเรียกว่า ซะโลง์ ชาวไทยเหมาเรียกรวมกับชาวอุรังลาโว้ยว่า ชาวเล แต่พวกเขาซึ่งมีภาษาของตนเองเรียกตัวเองว่า มอแกน 

ในอดีต คนกลุ่มนี้มีเรือเป็นบ้าน ลอยลำจากเกาะหนึ่งไปอีกเกาะหนึ่ง เลี้ยงชีวิตอยู่กับท้องทะเลแถบนี้ ตั้งแต่หมู่เกาะมะริดที่นี่ลงไปจนถึงเกาะสุรินทร์ของไทย ไม่ได้ตั้งหลักแหล่งชัดเจน วิถีชีวิตแบบนี้ทำให้ไม่สามารถอ้างความเป็นเจ้าของเหนือผืนดินและผืนน้ำแถบนี้ได้ ทั้งๆ ที่มีหลักฐานเชิงประจักษ์ว่า พวกเขาอยู่ที่นี่มาก่อนใคร นั่นคือชื่อเดิมของเกาะต่างๆ แถบนี้ในภาษาของเขานั่นเอง

Most of the Moken here and in Thailand are driven to have their home on land. Civilization in our standard that change their lives forever.

Ko Paing points at the opposite Lampi Island just across the channel, the area of their cemetery. "They never bury the bodies on the same ground where they live"

ปัจจุบัน ชาวมอแกนส่วนใหญ่ทั้งที่นี่และในเมืองไทยถูกผลักดันให้ 'ขึ้นบก' สิ่งที่ดูจะเป็นความเจริญในความคิดเห็นของเรา แต่ก็ทำให้วิถีชีวิตของพวกเขาเปลี่ยนไปอย่างไม่กลับคืน

After lunch, the boat approaches Bo Cho island in the middle of the picture above. This island is in the south of Lampi Island on the left. Both islands are very close together, separated by a narrow channel. An important landmark for navigation through this channel is a small rocky island (white arrow) in the picture.

The boat has to go beyond this rock up north to the southern cape of Lampi Island, then turn eastwards going through this deep channel to our next destination, the Moken village (red arrow). 

เรือจะต้องแล่นขึ้นไปทางทิศเหนือจนถึงปลายแหลมด้านใต้ของเกาะลาง์ปิ เพื่อตีวงอ้อมหินกองนี้ ก่อนจะเลี้ยวไปทางทิศตะวันออกเข้าร่องน้ำของช่องแคบ เพื่อไปยังจุดหมายของเรา คือ หมู่บ้านชาวเลตรงลูกศรสีแดง

Another important concern to navigate through this channel is a strong current, the strongest in this cruise. The west side of the channel is wide but becomes narrow towards the east, especially at the village site. Our Captain..Go Moe has to speed up the boat engine against the current carefully.

สิ่งสำคัญอีกอย่างหนึ่งในการเดินเรือผ่านช่องแคบนี้ คือ กระแสน้ำที่แรงมาก นับว่าแรงที่สุดในการล่องเรือครั้งนี้ เนื่องจากลักษณะของช่องแคบที่สอบเล็กลงไปทางทิศตะวันออก จนถึงตำแหน่งของหมู่บ้าน โกโม กัปตันจึงต้องเร่งเครื่องเรือสวนกระแสน้ำเข้าไปอย่างระมัดระวัง

Looking westwards, the nearest big Nga Mann or Shark Island is still quite far away with Kyunn Pila and Jar Lann Islands in the background.

I see a group of seagulls standing on a floating bamboo trunk. They'd have been exhausted from a long flight across the sea. They need a rest stop for a while before taking off further on their journey.

ผมเห็นนกนางนวลกลุ่มหนึ่งยืนเกาะขอนไผ่ที่ลอยน้ำผ่านมา พวกมันคงเหนื่อยไม่ใช่เล่นที่ต้องบินข้ามน้ำข้ามทะเลมาแสนไกล ต้องหาจุดพักสักครู่ ก่อนโผบินต่อไปตามทางของมัน

I think of my workload surge that has to be finished in the last second before I left for this trip, recall the phone calls and mails in Kaw Thaung. I left all behind after no more internet connection yesterday.

Every life needs a rest stop, to rest and ..look back, before moving on along our long journey.

ผมนึกถึงภาระงานที่ประดังเข้ามา ต้องใช้เวลาถึงวินาทีสุดท้ายก่อนออกเดินทางมาครั้งนี้จัดการให้เสร็จ เสียงโทรศัพท์และเมล์เรื่องงานตอนที่ยังอยู่เกาะสอง ผมทิ้งทุกอย่างนั้นไว้ข้างหลัง เมื่อไม่มีสัญญาณโทรศัพท์ตั้งแต่เมื่อวาน

ทุกชีวิตต้องการจุดพัก เพื่อหยุดนิ่ง..ทบทวน ก่อนก้าวเดินตามทางไกลของเราต่อไป

Leaving the 115 island (on the right) behind, if looking eastwards, we can see a row of islands in different size from north to south. 

The big Nyaung Wee Island (Buda Island in Google Maps) is in the middle. There are both Moken and non-Moken people on this island, their village and temple are on the east.

The next medium-size one on the left is Bo Net Kyaw Island (ဗိုလ်နက်ကျော်, Pulo Balu in Wikimapia), then two small islands, Bagan Pyar (ပုဂံပြား, Pulo Hayat in Wikimapia) which I'd like to translate as Dish Island and Nga Mok (ငါးမုတ်) or Pomfret Island. On the left end, there are many overlapping islands, Gu Gyi (ဂူကြီး) or Big Cave Island, Linn Shu (လင်းရှူး, Pulo Labiaung in Wikimapia) or Dolphin Island, Bo Cho (ဗိုလ်ချို) Island and the last one at the north end, Lampi or Kyunn Tann Shey (လန်ပိ, ကျွန်းတန်းရှည်) Island.

พอเรือพ้นเกาะ ๑๑๕ ซึ่งอยู่ขวามือสุดในรูป หากมองไปทางทิศตะวันออกจะเห็นเกาะขนาดต่างๆ ต่อเนื่องเป็นแนวจากเหนือลงใต้ 

เกาะญอง์วี (บูดาในแผนที่กูเกิล) เกาะใหญ่ตรงกลางรูป มีทั้งชาวเลและชาวบกอาศัย โดยมีหมู่บ้านและวัดตั้งอยู่ทางตะวันออกของเกาะ

In this picture, Bo Net Kyaw Island is in the middle. The nearby smaller Dish and Pomfret Islands can still be seen separately on the left.

These names remind me a folk tale of their neighboring islands in the Gulf of Thailand just across the narrow Kra Isthmus, the tragic story of Ta (Grandpa) Mong Lai, Yai (Grandma) Rampung and their daughter, Yom Doei. The legend which makes the islands come alive.

I ask the crew  "Any similar folk tale around here ?" The response is "not sure"

รูปนี้ เกาะโบแนะอ์จออยู่ตรงกลาง เกาะจานกับเกาะจะละเม็ดที่อยู่ทางซ้ายใกล้ๆ ยังเห็นแยกกัน

ได้ยินชื่อเกาะพวกนี้แล้ว ทำให้ผมนึกถึงนิทานพื้นบ้าน ตำนานของเกาะใกล้ๆ กัน แต่อยู่ในอ่าวไทย อีกฟากหนึ่งของคอคอดกระ คาบสมุทรแคบๆ ตรงนี้ เรื่องราวโศกนาฏกรรมของตาม่องล่าย ยายรำพึง และยมโดยลูกสาว อันเป็นที่มาของชื่อเกาะจำนวนมากในบริเวณนั้น การผูกเรื่องที่ทำให้เกาะต่างๆ มีชีวิตชีวามากขึ้น 

ผมสอบถามลูกเรือว่า มีเรื่องพื้นบ้านเกี่ยวกับที่มาของชื่อเกาะพวกนี้หรือเปล่า ได้รับคำตอบว่า ไม่แน่ใจ

At some point, the mainland can be clearly seen in the background. In fact, the islands around here are not just in the same range themselves, but also continually connect with the nearby mainland.

A small flat island in the middle of this picture is Than Dar Net Island. It is in the inner range near the continent with the names in group called Than Dar Phyu (သန္တာဖြူ), Than Dar Nee (သန္တာနီ) and Than Dar Net (သန္တာနက်) which mean white, red and black coral respectively. 

The foreground island on the left is Big Cave Island. On the right, The 'Pomfret' does overlap the 'Dish' Island.

'The Fish is now ready on a Dish'  I feel hungry, time for lunch!

ช่วงหนึ่ง เราจะมองเห็นผืนแผ่นดินใหญ่ที่อยู่ไม่ไกลเป็นฉากหลังชัดเจน ความจริงหมู่เกาะบริเวณนี้ไม่เพียงต่อเนื่องเป็นแนวเดียวกันเอง แต่ยังเชื่อมต่อเป็นผืนเดียวกับแผ่นดินใหญ่ที่อยู่ใกล้ๆ นี้อีกด้วย 

เกาะเล็กๆ ราบๆ ตรงกลางรูป คือ เกาะตาง์ดาแนะอ์ ซึ่งอยู่ในแนวเกาะที่ต่อเนื่องกันด้านในใกล้แผ่นดินใหญ่ มีชื่อเป็นกลุ่มจากเหนือมาใต้ คือ ตาง์ดาพยู (သန္တာဖြူ) ตาง์ดานี (သန္တာနီ) และตาง์ดาแนะอ์ (သန္တာနက်) หรือปะการังขาว แดง และดำ ตามลำดับ

เกาะที่มองเห็นอยู่ด้านหน้า ซ้ายมือคือเกาะถ้ำใหญ่ ส่วนขวามือ คือเกาะปลาจะละเม็ดที่ตอนนี้ซ้อนอยู่กับเกาะจานแล้ว

ปลาอยู่ในจานเรียบร้อยแล้ว จะละเม็ดเสียด้วย ท้องผมจึงเริ่มหิว ได้เวลาอาหารเที่ยวพอดี

Around ten o'clock, the boat departs for the next island. From the upper deck, I sit looking back at the 115 island and 'looking back' on the time when I had to search all information for this cruise myself. 

สิบโมงกว่า เรือของเราก็ถอนสมอ ออกเดินทางมุ่งหน้าสู่เกาะถัดไป จากดาดฟ้าชั้นบน ผมนั่งมองย้อนกลับไปยังเกาะ ๑๑๕ และนึก 'ทบทวน' ถึงช่วงที่ต้องหาข้อมูลด้วยตนเอง เพื่อตัดสินใจเดินทางมาที่นี่

I could find not much information and photos of the Mergui Archipelago, mostly from a few travel agencies, which gave us similar details. I go back to read through it which I saved in my phone.

   115 Island is about 38 nautical miles away from Kawthuang. 115 is a group of island where is crystal water and worth to snorkel to see much colorful school of fishes, hard and soft corals. It is fantastic one of the finest islands to spend time on hiking and jungle trekking through the rain forest. You’ll find here are the very definition of pristine very white and powder sand beaches. It’s no wonder visitors come from all around to sink their toes into miles of pure white sand.

I still want to explore these islands more.

ผมค้นข้อมูลและภาพถ่ายของหมู่เกาะมะริดได้ไม่มาก ส่วนใหญ่เป็นของบริษัทท่องเที่ยว ซึ่งก็มีไม่มากและให้ข้อมูลใกล้เคียงกัน ผมลองย้อนกลับไปอ่านข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับหมู่เกาะ ๑๑๕ ซึ่งผมเก็บไว้ในโทรศัพท์

   เกาะ ๑๑๕ อยู่ห่างจากเกาะสองประมาณ ๓๘ ​ไมล์ทะเล น้ำทะเลที่นี่ใสแจ๋ว เหมาะกับการดำน้ำตื้นชมฝูงปลาหลากสี ปะการังทั้งแข็งและอ่อน เป็นจุดที่ดีที่สุดสำหรับการเดินป่าฝนเขตร้อน และท่านจะได้สัมผัสว่า หาดทรายบริสุทธิ์ที่ขาวละเอียดนั้นเป็นอย่างไร ไม่ต้องแปลกใจหากนักท่องเที่ยวจากทุกมุมโลกอยากจะได้มาย่ำเท้าบนผืนทรายสีขาวสุดลูกหูลูกตานั้นที่นี่

ผมรู้สึกว่า ยังรู้จักที่นี่ไม่ดีพอ

The lifeboat lands ashore at the northeast sandy cape (an arrow in Google Map above). I'm the first one on the island and have a feeling of ..the differences,

..smooth soft sand in the bright sunlight. There are no big trees around, unlike the previous beaches early in the morning.

เรือเล็กพาเราขึ้นฝั่งตรงปลายแหลมที่เป็นหาดทรายด้านตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของเกาะ (ตรงลูกศรในแผนที่กูเกิลข้างบน) ผมเป็นคนแรกที่ลงจากเรือแล้วได้สัมผัสกับ..ความแตกต่าง 

ผืนทรายเนียนนุ่ม แดดจัดจ้า เพราะตรงปลายแหลมไม่มีไม้ใหญ่ ต่างจากหาดทรายเมื่อเช้า

After that, each of us enjoy our own preferences. Some love to swim in the hot sun, some prefer to sit or lie down under a shade, some go on exploring the exotic flora ..or all of the above.

Same place, different goals.

หลังจากนั้น แต่ละคนต่างก็ทำสิ่งที่ตนชอบ บ้างลงเล่นน้ำทะเลกลางแดดกล้า บ้างหาที่ร่มๆ นั่งนอนเล่น บ้างก็สำรวจต้นไม้ดอกไม้แปลกตา ..หรือถูกทุกข้อ

สถานที่เดียวกัน แต่จุดหมายเราต่างกัน

We follow the 'fishermen trail' back to the south beach to our lifeboat. 

This beach is not as beautiful as the previous one. There are many dead tree trunks, some of which are quite large. I think the oversized scale of this one seem to be disproportionate with a narrow beach near the forest, it 'll take too much dark space in my picture. But.. wait a minute..

Hey.. Its upper border contour harmoniously curves in perfect proportion with a small island in background, the next place in our schedule. Wow! Mother Nature!

เราเดินย้อน 'เส้นทางชาวประมง' กลับมาชายหาดฝั่งใต้ของเกาะที่จอดเรือเล็กไว้ 

หาดทรายฝั่งนี้สวยสู้อีกฝั่งไม่ได้ และมีไม้ใหญ่ทอดล้มขวางอยู่ ผมรู้สึกว่าขนาดของมันดูขัดตา ออกจะใหญ่เกินชายหาดแคบๆ ติดราวป่าตรงนั้นไป ถ้าจะถ่ายภาพก็คงเห็นทะมึนกินพื้นที่มากไป ไม่สมส่วน ผมนึกในใจ แต่..เดี๋ยว..

เฮ้ย.. แนวเส้นขอบบนของมันโค้งกลมกลืนสอดรับกับสัดส่วนของเกาะเล็กๆ ตรงหน้าที่เรากำลังจะไปเลย โห.. ธรรมชาติจัด..สรรค์
