No mangrove, no salted crab.
I've heard that the salted crabs in the famous Thai dish 'salted crab & papaya salad' are mostly imported because less and less Sesarma crabs are found in Thailand due to nearly all the mangrove forest has gone. And if Thailand largest salted crab market is in Ranong province opposite Kawthaung, all of those poor crabs are exported from Myanmar, probably caught in these mangrove forests here.

เคยได้ยินมาว่า ปูเค็มในเมนูส้มตำปูเค็มที่ชื่นชอบของคนไทยนั้น ส่วนใหญ่เป็นปูนำเข้า เพราะปูแสมในไทยแทบจะไม่เหลือให้จับแล้ว พร้อมๆ กับป่าชายเลนที่ค่อยๆ หายไปเกือบหมด และถ้าตลาดปูเค็มที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทยอยู่ที่จังหวัดระนอง นั่นก็หมายความว่า ปูโชคร้ายเหล่านั้นก็ถูกนำเข้ามาจากเมียนมา และน่าจะถูกจับมาจากป่าชายเลนแถบนี้นี่เอง

Paddling here, I see a small fisherman boat drift quietly under the tree shade. The crew tells me that its captain is a crab catcher which requires special skills, both concentration and patience.
These crabs are very fast. From distance, we can see many of them on the mangrove roots. But if we try to approach closely, they'll jump into the turbid water immediately, mockingly leave only some droplets of water for us to see as in the picture above.
ตอนพายเรือเข้ามาที่นี่ ผมเห็นเรือประมงเล็กๆ ของชาวบ้าน ลอยลำหลบร่มอยู่เงียบๆ ลูกเรือบอกว่าเป็นเรือของคนจับปู ซึ่งต้องอาศัยทักษะชั้นเลิศ ทั้งสมาธิและความอดทน
ปูพวกนี้ไวมาก แค่เราขยับตัวเข้าใกล้ มันก็กระโดดผลุงจากรากโกงกางที่เห็นมันไต่ยั้วเยี้ยอยู่จากระยะไกล หายเกลี้ยงในพริบตา ทิ้งไว้แต่รอยกระเซ็นของหยดน้ำให้เห็นเหมือนเย้ยเยาะ แบบรูปข้างบน

Oh dear, as a radiation oncologist specialized in killing cancer with radiation, I can't even take a picture of these tiny lovely crabs!
หมดปัญญา ก็เลย ...ซูมกล้องสิครับ แต่ผลที่ออกมา ..ก็พร่ามัว
เสียชื่อหมอรังสีรักษา หมอฉายแสงรักษามะเร็งหมด แค่ถ่ายรูปปูน้อยหนีบมือก็ยังไม่ได้เลย ไม่ต้องคิดที่จะลงมือจับ
