There are many water collections and puddles on this wide sandy beach, some are isolated, some are connected by flow of crystal-clear sea water. 

Immediately, I sink down in one pool with a water flowing, just to be away from those disturbing insects.

บนหาดทรายกว้าง มีแอ่งน้ำเล็กๆ เต็มไปหมด บางแอ่งแยกกัน บางแอ่งมีน้ำทะเลใสแจ๋วไหลเป็นทางต่อเนื่องจากแอ่งหนึ่งไปยังแอ่งถัดไป

This beach is called 254, not an attractive name. I'd like to call it ..Long Beach, because it is the longest one on this island. 

We arrive here during a low tide, so the beach is quite wide and long. No one wants to walk up the she-oak shade afar, just enjoy the sand ..sand and sand now.

ชายหาดนี้มีชื่อว่า หาด 254 ซึ่งฟังดูแล้วไม่ค่อยเชิญชวนให้มาเที่ยวเท่าไร อยากจะเรียกแบบผมเองว่า ..หาดยาว มากกว่า เพราะว่า ที่นี่เป็นชายหาดที่ยาวที่สุดบนเกาะนี้

ช่วงที่เรามาถึงเป็นช่วงน้ำลง จึงมองเห็นหาดทรายโค้งทั้งกว้างและยาวสุดลูกหูลูกตา จนไม่มีใครสักคนคิดจะเดินเข้าไปยังแนวสนตรงหน้า ต่างหาจุดสนใจทำบนหาดนั่นแหละ

There is a sandy beach connected its northern end to a small island called Kulat Island (ကူလက်ကျွန်း).

The southern end of the beach is a river, no ..just a small shallow stream or creek. We can walk along its cool water greeting wild monkeys that come down from the hill on the opposite bank. They look at strangers like us suspiciously.

A Needle in a Haystack งมเข็มในมหาสมุทร

I think of 'a needle in a haystack' ('a needle in an ocean' in Thai) when the crew tell me that Ko Paing will SCUBA dive at the mouth of Southern River in Lampi Island. When we go ashore, he will look for the lost anchor from the previous trip here.

When our boat arrives at the dive spot near the river mouth, the sea looks dark at its low tide with many strips of dirty waste floating on the surface. The visibility below will be really bad. The lost anchor may be unpredictably swept away by the current at the river mouth like this.

Strolling along the only alley parallel to the beach looking at the 'life portraits' of people, I notice that most of them are women of all ages and children. We speak different languages, so need to communicate with non-verbal and smiles.

I still feel like a stranger walking in their home and boundaries. We call ourselves travelers, but travelers should respect the locals' privacy.

With this thought, I have an idea not to take photos included the villagers' face, for example, a close-up picture of grandmum sitting bare-chested in front of her own house. But how about a group of barefoot kids we meet with our first step on the beach, what can I do ?

ระหว่างเดินตามถนนสายเดียวที่ขนานไปกับชายหาด เพื่อดู 'ภาพชีวิต' ของชาวบ้านที่นี่ สังเกตว่า ชาวบ้านส่วนใหญ่ที่เห็นเป็นผู้หญิงทุกวัยและเด็ก ความที่เราต่างภาษาพูดกัน จึงได้แต่ใช้ภาษากาย รอยยิ้มสื่อสาร

ผมยังรู้สึกเหมือนตัวเองเป็นคนแปลกหน้า ที่มาเที่ยวเดินอยู่ในบ้าน ในที่ของเขา เราเรียกตนเองว่านักท่องเที่ยว แต่นักท่องเที่ยวก็ควรจะเคารพความเป็นส่วนตัวของเจ้าของบ้านด้วย

ความคิดที่ผุดขึ้นมานี้ ทำให้ผมตั้งโจทย์กับตนเองว่า จะไม่ถ่ายรูปที่เห็นหน้าชาวบ้านใกล้ๆ ประเภทจ่อกล้องเข้าไปถ่ายรูปคุณยายที่นั่งเปลือยอกอยู่หน้าบ้านของตนเอง แต่สำหรับเด็กน้อยเท้าเปล่ากลุ่มนี้ที่เราเจอตั้งแต่ขึ้นเกาะล่ะ ผมจะทำยังไงดี

According to the Lampi Marine National Park Guidebook recent published by Italian Istituto Oikos and Myanmar Forest Department, It's suggested not give sweets, money or gifts directly to children, their parents do not appreciate this practice and this only leads to a begging mentality.

จากคู่มืออุทยานแห่งชาติทางทะเลลาง์ปิ ซึ่งเพิ่งตีพิมพ์โดยองค์กรอนุรักษ์ธรรมชาติของอิตาลีและกรมป่าไม้ของเมียนมา ไม่แนะนำให้แจกขนม เงินหรือของอะไรให้เด็กๆ เพราะพ่อแม่เขาอาจไม่ชอบวิธีการแบบนี้ และอาจจะนำไปสู่พฤติกรรมช่างขอในอนาคต

A large village on Bo Cho Island is called Ma Kyone Galet (မကြုံဂလတ်). At first I think it is a Moken village, but in fact only one third of the population here (nearly 1000) are Moken, although this is their largest community on land.

What I see, the village is generally clean and tidy. This matches with what an Italian volunteer who work on the island tells us included the waste management project.

หมู่บ้านขนาดใหญ่บนเกาะโบโชนี้ชื่อ มะโจง์กะเละอ์ (မကြုံဂလတ်) ตอนแรกผมเข้าใจผิดคิดว่า หมู่บ้านนี้มีแต่ชาวมอแกนเท่านั้น ความจริงประชากรเกือบ ๑ พันคนที่นี่ มีเพียง ๑ ใน ๓ เท่านั้นที่เป็นชาวมอแกน แต่ก็ต้องนับว่าเป็นชุมชนใหญ่ที่สุดของชาวเลกลุ่มนี้

There is a school on the island (bottom picture above) with my favorite 'tobacco free' sign, a library (top picture above) and a community health center (middle picture above) with only one midwife. Ko Paing told me that if someone here has serious illness, they have to spend 3 hours to the mainland and another 4 hours to the hospital in the nearest town.

This pier was likely to be built recently, it was not in the old 2014 pictures.

When our lifeboat sends us at the pier, I'm so curious that.. why here, and why we have to 'climb up' it and have a walk up the island ? Why we're not landing ashore directly ? and ..did the locals use it ?

Later, I have my answer at the souvenir shop selling handmade products near the pier run by the project supported by OIKOS from Italy, the price tags are in Thai Baht. This island has many foreign visitors, some of which arrived here by their private boats or large boats from Phuket. This pier was built to accommodate those larger vessels.

I'm myself also one of the travelers, so have to land here.. the selfie check-point.


สะพานเทียบเรือนี้น่าจะเพิ่งสร้างไม่กี่ปี เพราะถ้าย้อนไปดูรูปเก่าๆ ช่วงปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๕๗ จะยังไม่เห็นสะพานนี้เลย 

ตอนเรือเล็กมาส่งเราที่สะพาน ผมเอะใจว่า ทำไมต้องมาส่งตรงนี้ แล้วให้เราต้อง 'ปีนขึ้น' สะพานก่อนแล้วเดินขึ้นฝั่ง แทนที่จะส่งตรงชายหาด แล้วนึกสงสัยต่อว่า ..ชาวบ้านเขาได้ใช้ประโยชน์หรือเปล่า

ผมมานึกออกที่หลัง ในร้านขายของที่ระลึกซึ่งเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ในชุมชนของโครงการที่ได้รับความช่วยเหลือโดย OIKOS จากอิตาลีที่ตั้งอยู่ใกล้สะพาน แล้วติดป้ายราคาของเป็นเงินบาทของไทย ทำให้รู้ว่าเกาะนี้จะมีนักท่องเที่ยวต่างชาติแวะเวียนมาเยือนเป็นประจำ ส่วนหนึ่งมากับเรือส่วนตัวและเรือขนาดใหญ่ตรงจากภูเก็ต สะพานนี้จึงสร้างขึ้นเพื่อรองรับเรือขนาดใหญ่เหล่านั้น

ผมคือนักท่องเที่ยว จึงได้มาขึ้นเกาะตรงสะพานนี้ ซึ่งมีมุมถ่ายรูปสวยๆ ไว้ต้อนรับด้วย

The pier symbolizes a link or connection between..a modern outside world and a simple life of Moken people in this setting ..yes ..via tourism.

To improve the quality of life and living condition is the expected outcome from the eyes of outsider standard, it may not be the same from the locals' point of view. The articles I read before coming here remind me to set my first step on their sand with respect.

Man and boat are one and the same in nature and this reminds them that without their boats they are no longer either nomads or Moken.

Before coming here, I've searched about Moken people and their boats and really impressed the quote above. Here at Bo Cho Island, I pay more attention at any kinds of boats and expect to see them, especially the original large dug-out one which served as their dwelling place called kabang.

At the wooden pier, there are three boats bound. One is our modern inflatable lifeboat that take us from the outside world here invasively. Another two, a wooden one and a plastic one are tied together, they remind me of the interrelation of past and present.

Nowaday most of fisherman's boats here are made of wooden planks, and cut-tailed for ease of engine installation, the same trend as my home-land's kolae in Southern Thailand. The engines replace the oars and sails, making a journey faster and farther, but less travel in fleets with more cost from diesel.

ที่ท่าเทียบเรือ มีเรือสามลำผูกอยู่ หนึ่งลำคือเรือเล็กอัดลมทันสมัยที่นำเราจากโลกภายนอกรุกมาถึงที่นี่ อีกสองลำผูกไว้ด้วยกัน ลำหนึ่งเป็นไม้ อีกลำเป็นพลาสติก สิ่งที่ชักนำให้ผมคิดถึงความเชื่อมโยงจากอดีตถึงปัจจุบัน

ปัจจุบัน เรือส่วนใหญ่ของชาวบ้านที่นี่ยังเป็นไม้แต่เป็นไม้กระดานและเปลี่ยนมาเป็นเรือท้ายตัด เพื่อสะดวกในการติดตั้งเครื่องยนต์ การเปลี่ยนแปลงที่ไม่ต่างจากเรือ ฆอและ ท้ายตัดทางใต้ที่บ้านผม การใช้เครื่องยนต์แทนฝีพายและใบเรือทำให้การเดินทางสะดวกรวดเร็ว ได้ระยะทางไกลขึ้น แต่ก็ทำให้วิถีชีวิตการออกเรือเป็นกลุ่มลดลง พร้อมๆ กับค่าใช้จ่ายจากน้ำมันดีเซลที่เพิ่มขึ้น

Looking eastwards as the picture above, there are many boats, large and small of different styles. Our boat in the channel looks very small from the farthest distance.

The original kabang may be disappearing, but many different kinds of boats are still here for a long time.

According to Moken, kabang is also a general term for other boats.

กาบัง แบบดั้งเดิมอาจจะไม่มีให้เห็นอีก แต่ นาวา หลากหลายรูปแบบ ยังจะคงอยู่คู่ที่นี่ไปอีกนาน

คำว่า กาบัง ในภาษามอแกน ยังใช้เรียก เรือ  ทั่วไปได้อีกด้วย
