A large village on Bo Cho Island is called Ma Kyone Galet (မကြုံဂလတ်). At first I think it is a Moken village, but in fact only one third of the population here (nearly 1000) are Moken, although this is their largest community on land.

What I see, the village is generally clean and tidy. This matches with what an Italian volunteer who work on the island tells us included the waste management project.

หมู่บ้านขนาดใหญ่บนเกาะโบโชนี้ชื่อ มะโจง์กะเละอ์ (မကြုံဂလတ်) ตอนแรกผมเข้าใจผิดคิดว่า หมู่บ้านนี้มีแต่ชาวมอแกนเท่านั้น ความจริงประชากรเกือบ ๑ พันคนที่นี่ มีเพียง ๑ ใน ๓ เท่านั้นที่เป็นชาวมอแกน แต่ก็ต้องนับว่าเป็นชุมชนใหญ่ที่สุดของชาวเลกลุ่มนี้ 

สภาพทั่วไปของหมู่บ้านที่เห็น นับว่าสะอาดสะอ้านเป็นระเบียบ ตรงกับคำพูดของอาสาสมัครชาวอิตาเลียนที่ทำงานบนเกาะบอกเรา ซึ่งรวมไปถึงโครงการจัดการขยะ

There is a school on the island (bottom picture above) with my favorite 'tobacco free' sign, a library (top picture above) and a community health center (middle picture above) with only one midwife. Ko Paing told me that if someone here has serious illness, they have to spend 3 hours to the mainland and another 4 hours to the hospital in the nearest town. 

บนเกาะมีโรงเรียน (ภาพล่างสุดข้างบน) ติดป้ายโรงเรียนปลอดบุหรี่ถูกใจผมเสียด้วย มีห้องสมุด (ภาพบนสุดข้างบน) และสถานีอนามัย (ภาพกลางข้างบน) ซึ่งมีพยาบาลผดุงครรภ์ประจำอยู่เพียงคนเดียว ซึ่งโกปายง์บอกผมว่า ถ้ามีใครบนเกาะเจ็บหนัก ก็จะต้องใช้เวลา ๓ ชม. ไปขึ้นฝั่งแผ่นดินใหญ่ และใช้เวลาอีกประมาณ ๔ ชม.เข้าถึงโรงพยาบาลในเมืองที่ใกล้ที่สุด

Moken people usually build their houses on stilts near the beach where the sea level can come up during the high tide and of course ..near their boats.

ชาวมอแกนมักจะสร้างบ้านยกพื้นบนเสาอยู่ใกล้หาดซึ่งน้ำทะเลขึ้นมาถึงเวลาน้ำขึ้น และแน่นอน ..อยู่ใกล้เรือของพวกเขา

There is a small Buddhist temple on the hill at the west-end.

มีวัดพุทธเล็กๆ ตั้งอยู่บนเนินเขาทางตะวันตกของหมู่บ้าน

The people condition here may be considered by some as primitive or sub-standard. The point is which standard to be used ? 

This question reminds me a parable of "the fisherman and the banker"

สภาพของชาวบ้านแบบนี้ บางคนอาจะมองว่าล้าหลัง ไม่เจริญ ต้องช่วยให้เขาเจริญกว่านี้ แต่ประเด็นมันอยู่ที่ว่า เอามาตรฐานใครมาวัด 

คำถามนี้ทำให้ผมคิดถึงเรื่องเล่าเปรียบเปรยของ "ชาวประมงกับนายธนาคาร"
