Muddy Coast ชายเลน

Lampi Island (Kyunn Tann Shey)

The muddy coastal area is the overlapping zone between the earth and the sea. The ground is muddy wet which always or sometimes below the sea level with intertidal variation. 

This borderline condition makes me think that most of the trees here may not grow that big, far away from the dense forest with the shade of tall trees blocking the sunlight down to the ground.

I have to change my idea when I come here.

ชายเลน คือ พื้นที่ชายฝั่ง รอยต่อระหว่างผืนดินกับผืนน้ำ ผืนดินเป็นโคลนเลนแฉะชุ่ม น้ำทะเลท่วมถึงตลอดเวลาหรือเพียงบางช่วงตามน้ำขึ้นน้ำลง

สภาพคาบลูกคาบดอกแบบนี้ ทำให้ผมคิดว่า ต้นไม้ที่ขึ้นอยู่ได้ ไม่น่าจะโตมากนัก ห่างไกลจากป่าทึบที่มีต้นไม้สูงใหญ่จำนวนมาก เบียดเสียดกันแน่น จนแสงแดดส่องลงมาไม่ถึงพื้น

แล้วผมก็เปลี่ยนใจ เมื่อได้มาเห็นที่นี่

Kayaking in an open space under the hot sun for a while, then I can find some tree shades near the river banks. The trees become dense on both sides.

OK, Let's call it the mangrove 'forest'.

พายเรือคายัคกลางแจ้งโล่งๆ แดดเปรี้ยงๆ อยู่ไม่ถึงอึดใจ ก็เริ่มมีร่มไม้ให้หลบแดดตรงชายน้ำ ต้นไม้สองฝั่งก็แน่นทึบ

ยอมแล้ว แบบนี้จะเรียกว่า 'ป่า'ชายเลน ก็ตามใจ

Shortly after that, tall trees reaching for the sky are all around.
Wow.. look at that leaning giant mangrove!

เผลออีกแป๊บเดียว มีแต่ต้นไม้สูงเสียดฟ้า
วาว.. ดูโกงกางยักษ์เอียงกะเท่เร่ต้นนั้นสิ!

From the Lampi Marine National Park survey, there were 63 mangrove species recorded on this island. The dominant species in this high salinity area are tall-stilt mangrove (Rhizophora apiculata) and Asiatic mangrove (Rhizophora mucronata).

จากการสำรวจของอุทยานแห่งชาติทางทะเลลาง์ปิ มีพืชถึง ๖๓ สายพันธุ์ในป่าชายเลนบนเกาะนี้ และในบริเวณที่ดินมีความเค็มจากน้ำทะเลสูงมากแบบนี้ ต้นไม้ส่วนใหญ่ คือ โกงกางใบเล็ก (Rhizophora apiculata) และโกงกางใบใหญ่ (Rhizophora mucronata)

May be cedar mangrove (Xylocarpus moluccensis) fruit, not just Rhizophora here.

I've heard about the importance of mangrove forest to protect coastal erosion naturally, much better than cement blocks or constructed barriers. Most importantly, these dirty forests had saved many lives from the 2004 Tsunami.

Today I come to visit one of the best-conserved mangrove forests in the world. We protect you, you protect us.

เคยแต่ได้ยินถึงความสำคัญของป่าชายเลน ที่ป้องกันการกัดเซาะชายฝั่งตามธรรมชาติที่ได้ผลดีที่สุด ดีกว่าแท่งซิเมนต์หรือเขื่อนกันคลื่น และที่สำคัญ ป่าสกปรกเละๆ แบบนี้แหละ ที่เคยช่วยชีวิตมนุษย์เราไว้ได้มากมาย จากเหตุการณ์คลื่นยักษ์สึนามิเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2547

วันนี้ได้มาเห็น ป่าชายเลนที่ได้รับการอนุรักษ์ไว้ดีที่สุดแห่งหนึ่งบนโลก รักษ์เขา รักษ์เรา
