The last twilight fades into the darkness when the lights in the village on Pila Island flicker.

And when the boat engine has been turned off into silence, I hear the different sounds clearly tonight. one is periodic in rhythm, the waves; another is softly continuous, the waterfall cascading down the sandy beach.

I lie down listening to the Duets, the beautiful lullaby, then have a good night sleep.

แสงสุดท้ายของดวงอาทิตย์ลาลับไปในความมืด พร้อมๆ กับแสงไฟดวงน้อยจากหมู่บ้านชาวประมงบนเกาะพีลาสว่างขึ้น 

แล้วเมื่อเครื่องยนต์เรือดับลงกลางดึก ผมก็ได้ยินเสียงที่แตกต่างจากทุกคืน แจ่มชัด หนึ่งสาดซัดเป็นจังหวะคือเสียงคลื่น อีกหนึ่งนุ่มนวลสม่ำเสมอ คือเสียงสายน้ำตกที่สัมผัสผืนทราย

ผมนอนฟังสองเสียงเสนาะนั้น เป็นดนตรีกล่อมนอน จนหลับไปอย่างเป็นสุข

Near the waterfall, there is a medium-size tree on the rock. Its large white tasseled flowers make me think of an apple mangrove tree, but it should be some other kind of the same species. Its branches are tied with many colorful pieces of clothes.

The crew tells me that they are the old fabrics of the boat prow, a belief being done for generations.

ใกล้ๆ กับน้ำตก มีต้นไม้ขนาดกลางขึ้นอยู่บนโขดหิน ออกดอกเป็นพู่สีขาวดอกใหญ่เหมือนดอกลำพู น่าจะเป็นต้นอะไรสักอย่างในสายพันธ์ุเดียวกัน มีคนเอาผ้าสีสดสะดุดตามาผูกไว้ตามกิ่งเต็มไปหมด

ลูกเรือบอกผมว่า ผ้าพวกนั้นเป็นผ้าผูกหัวเรือเก่า เป็นความเชื่อที่ถือปฏิบัติสืบต่อกันมานาน

From the fresh water station, our boat moves across the channel to the opposite Bo Ywe Island.  We 'll have another snorkeling in the evening.

But this island has something more attractive to me than snorkeling ...a small waterfall at the beach.

Instead of snorkeling, I swim to the beach first and find out that they are not just one, but two small waterfalls. The fresh cool water flows from the rocky cliffs to the soft sandy beach.

These waterfalls have enough water throughout the year. So the fishermen and tourists, especially in the yachts which have no water storage, come to use and take a bath at this free fresh water resource here. No wonder why there is a red sign near the waterfalls, the warning message from the concessionaire company.

After snorkeling, to have a shower on the beach under the waterfalls with two choices, strong or gentle flow, is such a paradise!

ผมยังไม่ลงดำน้ำ แต่ว่ายน้ำเข้าฝั่งไปที่หาดทรายก่อน แล้วก็พบว่า มันไม่ใช่แค่หนึ่ง แต่เป็นน้ำตกเล็กๆ ถึงสองสาย สายน้ำเย็นสดชื่นที่ไหลลงมาจากผาหินด้านบนลงสู่พื้นทรายนุ่ม 

น้ำตกนี้มีน้ำตลอดปี จึงเป็นแหล่งน้ำจืดที่ชาวเรือและนักท่องเที่ยว โดยเฉพาะเรือยอชท์ซึ่งไม่มีที่เก็บน้ำแวะมาใช้มาอาบน้ำกัน ไม่แปลกใจว่า ทำไมป้ายต้องห้ามสีแดงของบริษัทที่ได้รับสัมปทานนั้น ถึงถูกติดไว้ใกล้ๆ กับน้ำตก

การได้มาอาบน้ำตกริมหาดหลังขึ้นจากดำน้ำที่นี่ แถมมีให้เลือกได้ด้วยว่า จะเอาแบบน้ำแรงหรือน้ำเบา สวรรค์ชัดๆ!

Pila Island or Kyunn Pila (ကျွန်းဖီလာ) in Myanmar, used to be called Great Swinton Island, most likely to be a British military officer's name, during the colonial period. It is among the islands in Mergui Archipelago that I've heard the name and read the reviews before coming here. It is famous for fresh water supply, snorkeling, SCUBA diving and fisherman village. 

เกาะพีลา หรือ จูง์พีลา (ကျွန်းဖီလာ) ในภาษาเมียนมา เคยชื่อ เกาะเกรตสวินตัน ซึ่งน่าจะเป็นชื่อนายทหารคนหนึ่งของอังกฤษในสมัยที่เมียนมายังเป็นเมืองขึ้นอยู่ เกาะนี้เป็นเกาะแรกๆในหมู่เกาะมะริดที่ผมได้ยินชื่อ เพราะมีข้อมูลให้ค้นได้อ่านมาก่อนเดินทาง มีชื่อเสียงทั้งเป็นแหล่งน้ำจืด จุดดำน้ำทั้งตื้นและลึก และหมู่บ้านชาวประมง

The fisherman village is in the bay on the east coast near the fresh water station, opposite to Bo Ywe Island.

The crew asked us. "Go to the village?"

All of us say no, so Ko Paing and Yan Naing Aung take the lifeboat to buy some seafood for our dinner. Both go straight to the village, not to the fishing boats at the water station.

พอทุกคนส่ายหัว โกปายง์กับยาง์นายง์ออง์ก็นั่งเรือเล็กขึ้นฝั่ง เพื่อไปซื้ออาหารทะเลมาทำอาหารเย็น ทั้งคู่ตรงไปที่หมู่บ้าน ไม่ได้ซื้อจากเรือประมงที่จอดตรงสถานีน้ำ

From a distance, The fisherman village here is looked smaller than Ma Kyone Galet at Bo Cho Island. There is also a Buddhist temple at the top of the hill, said to guarantee that the villagers will not be moved away.

I don't know the reason why others do not want to visit the village. But for me, I don't want to go peeking other's private lives anymore.

Not just my feet did not touch the island ground, we also do not go to any other place. Its image in my head is only a water station. Just a peek!

By the way, this freshwater station is the westernmost longitude of the cruise.

มองจากระยะไกล หมู่บ้านชาวประมงที่นี่เล็กกว่าบนเกาะโบโช แต่มีวัดพุทธบนยอดเนินเขาเหมือนกัน ว่ากันว่า เพื่อเป็นหลักประกันว่าชาวบ้านจะไม่ถูกไล่ที่

ผมไม่รู้เหตุผลของนักท่องเที่ยวคนอื่นที่ไม่ขึ้นฝั่งครั้งนี้ แต่สำหรับผม ผมรู้สึกไม่อยากไปเดินด้อมๆ มองๆ ชีวิตประจำวันของชาวบ้านอีก

นอกจากเท้าจะไม่ได้สัมผัสเกาะแล้ว เราก็ไม่ได้แวะที่จุดไหนของเกาะอีกเลย ภาพของเกาะนี้ของผม มีแค่สถานีน้ำเท่านั้น เหมือนแค่แอบดู!

อย่างไรก็ตาม ขณะที่จอดเรืออยู่ท่ีสถานีน้ำนี้ คือพิกัดตะวันตกสุดของการเดินทางครั้งนี้

The sea water at the station with a huge traffic is surprisingly crystal green. Remarkably, there are a lot of small fish visible from the boat, like a giant aquarium.

An aquarium which literally means a place of water or the sea.

When our boat approaches the fresh water station, I see Yan Naing Aung one moment at the bow, then another moment at the stern to handle the ropes fastened to the poles on the floating station at both sides.  This task seems to be easy but actually required a good skill and coordination to carry out quickly.

This floating station makes me think of a gas station, especially the stand-alone in a remote area where every vehicle has to visit for refueling. But here, fisherman boats, tourists boats or yachts must come to refill their reserved fresh water. I have to say.. a very success business.

โป๊ะลอยน้ำที่นี่ ทำให้คิดถึงปั๊มน้ำมัน โดยเฉพาะที่อยู่ไกลๆ กันดาร ทั้งพื้นที่มีอยู่ปั๊มเดียว ทำให้รถแทบทุกคันจะต้องแวะไปเติมน้ำมันกัน แต่ที่นี่เรือเขาไม่ได้แวะมาเติมน้ำมันกัน แต่เป็นน้ำจืด ทั้งเรือประมง เรือท่องเที่ยว หรือเรือยอชท์ ซึ่งต้องบอกว่า ขายดีมาก

If we look up at the island, we'll see the PVC pipe draining the water from the weir on the hill to this station.

The price of 1000 liters or 1 cubic meter of fresh water is about 200 Thai baht.

Our boat can reserve 2000 liters of water and we've already spent about only half of this volume during the past 3-day trip. There 's still more than enough water for the rest of the cruise, but Captain Moe would like to make sure we'll have fresh water in full capacity.

As our boat is turning into the channel between Pila and Bo Ywe Island, I see a boat comes from the opposite direction. The is the first large fisherman boat I see since we've left Kaw Thaung, a kind of boat I'm really familiar with in my hometown river at Pattani or fisherman piers anywhere. This is a fishing boat for trade and seafood industry, not a local fishing boat for a living.

In the bay of Pila Island, there is no pier, but something else that I would like to call a 'floating trade center' instead. A center where many large and small boats dock, including our boat.

On the boats, I see a lot of young crew busy working with what they've caught, picking, selecting them among a pile of ice and plastic containers. Yes, to make them ready for a long distance delivery.

บนเรือเหล่านั้น ผมเห็นลูกเรือวัยฉกรรจ์จำนวนมาก กำลังง่วนอยู่กับสัตว์ทะเลที่จับได้ เลือกคัดแยก กองน้ำแข็ง และภาชนะพลาสติกขนาดใหญ่ แน่นอน..เพื่อพร้อมกับการนำส่งไปยังจุดหมายปลายทางที่ห่างไกล

After kayaking at Lampi Island, our boat sets out for another long trip. Heading westward to the great ocean, there is no more island nearby for almost 3 hours. But if looking north, Lampi Island is still there in the distance all the time ...such a long island.

หลังกลับจากพายเรือคายัคที่เกาะลาง์ปิ เรือของเราก็ออกเดินทางไกลอีกครั้ง มุ่งหน้าสู่ท้องทะเลกว้างทิศตะวันตก โดยแทบจะไม่เห็นเกาะอะไรใกล้ๆ อีกเลยเกือบ ๓ ชม. แต่ถ้ามองไปทางทิศเหนือ จะเห็นแนวเกาะลาง์ปิอยู่ลิบๆ ตลอดเวลา เกาะเขายาวจริงๆ

หลังรับประทานอาหารเที่ยง ผมจึงมีเวลานั่งคุยกับลูกเรือ รับฟังชีวิตความเป็นมาที่น่าสนใจของแต่ละคนก่อนจะมาทำงานนี้ ชีวิตที่แตกต่าง แต่มีสิ่งหนึ่งที่เหมือนกัน คือ ความรักทะเล อ่านรายละเอียดของพวกเขาแต่ละคนได้ ที่นี่

Finally, our next destination is right in front, the three islands. Respectively from the left in the picture above, the smallest one in the distance is Nga Mann Island (ငမန်း), the next bigger one is Bo Ywe Island (ဗိုလ်ရွဲ), then the largest in the middle is Pila Island. 

All the natural resources on these islands and surroundings are officially under the concession agreement between Myanmar government and Moken International Company Ltd., the condition quite different from Lampi Island which is protected in the Marine National Park.

ในที่สุด จุดหมายต่อไปก็อยู่ตรงหน้า เกาะ ๓ เกาะ ตามลำดับจากซ้ายมือในภาพข้างบน เกาะเล็กๆ ไกลที่สุด คือ เกาะงะมาง์ (ငမန်း) ถัดมาใหญ่ขึ้นหน่อย คือ เกาะโบ-ยแว (ဗိုလ်ရွဲ) และเกาะที่ใหญ่ที่สุดกลางภาพ คือ เกาะพีลา

I still have no idea what is the difference between two strategies of natural resource management until our boat arrives at Pila Island.

I take this photograph from inside our boat. There is a large fisherman boat in the window frame and a reflection of another empty window at the nearby wall.

ผมยังคิดไม่ออกว่า การจัดการทรัพยากรธรรมชาติทั้งสองวิธี ส่งผลแตกต่างกันอย่างไร จนกระทั่งเรือของเรามาถึงเกาะพีลา 

ผมถ่ายภาพนี้จากในเรือของเราออกไปข้างนอก เห็นเรือประมงขนาดใหญ่อยู่ภายในกรอบหน้าต่าง ตรงผนังใกล้ๆ มีเงาสะท้อนจากหน้าต่างอีกบานหนึ่งที่ว่างเปล่า

And when we arrive at our night stop near Bo Ywe Island later, I notice a sign from the company holding the concession on the island, a red sign with many prohibitions.
