Tonight, although our boat shelters in a semi-circular shaped bay, the other side is wide open to the sea. ..the Indian Ocean, no island range to fender the wind. Even in the calm season like this, our boat continuously drifts, moving back and forth all the time, unlike last night.

คืนนี้ แม้ว่าเรือของเราจะจอดพักอยู่ในเวิ้งอ่าวรูปครึ่งวงกลม แต่อีกด้านหนึ่งก็เปิดสู่ท้องทะเลกว้าง ..มหาสมุทรอินเดีย โดยไม่มีแนวเกาะช่วยบังกระแสลม ในยามลมสงบแบบนี้ ก็ยังทำให้เรือลอยคว้าง หมุนวน ขยับเปลี่ยนทิศทางไปมาตลอดเวลา แตกต่างจากคืนก่อน

Name ..word by which a person or place is known or spoken to, this word itself is pronounced similarly in many languages included Thai, English, Myanmar and Malay. But we name the same thing or place differently.

 
Lampi, the name of the island, or Lanbi (လန်ပိ) comes from Moken word 'Lebi' which is the name of one Moken subgroup who live here. It's called Kyunn Tann Shey in Myanmar and Sullivan's Island in English.

นาม เนม นามะ นาแม ..คำที่หมายถึงชื่อสำหรับใช้เรียกกันคำนี้ พ้องเสียงกันในหลายภาษา ทั้งไทย อังกฤษ เมียนมา และมลายู แต่ชื่อที่เรียกของสิ่งเดียวกัน กลับต่างกัน

While traveling, I really enjoy asking the place name which is the easiest way to learn about its background briefly. But for this cruise, there are more than a hundred islands' names, such a hard work. I can't remember them all, so I have to write down. How to make it less confusing, I have to take the pictures. But it isn't easy at all when taking small photos in my smartphone to ask the crew.

เวลาไปไหน ผมชอบถามชื่อสถานที่ เพราะมันช่วยให้เรารู้จักความเป็นมาของสถานที่นั้นแบบสั้นๆ ง่ายๆ สำหรับคราวนี้ ผมเจอศึกหนัก เพราะมีชื่อเกาะให้รู้จักสมอยากเป็นร้อย พอจำไม่ไหวก็ใช้จด แต่จะจดยังไงให้ไม่สับสน ก็ต้องถ่ายรูปประกอบ แต่มันก็ไม่ง่ายนักเวลาเอารูปเล็กๆ ที่เราถ่ายในโทรศัพท์มือถือไปถามชื่อเกาะจากลูกเรือ

ผมต้องใช้วิธีวาดรูปเกาะที่เห็นตรงหน้าในสมุดจด จดเวลาที่วาดและถ่ายรูปไว้ แบบสองภาพข้างบน แล้วเอาไปถามลูกเรือให้ช่วยเขียนชื่อเกาะเป็นภาษาเมียนมา

Finally, I have to recheck it with the detailed map Aw Sa Kar gives me on the last day of the trip.

Lampi Island or Kyunn Tann Shey is long and has a form of inverted L-shape, it is the biggest island and the core of the marine national park. I'd like to translate it as Long Island. Its website's headline describes...

Lampi Marine National Park was declared ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003. It protects evergreen and mangrove forests, beaches and dunes, coral reefs, sea grass and a rich biodiversity, with over 1,000 recorded species.

From Long Beach, our boat sails along the southwest coast of Lampi Island, passing Kulat Island (ကူလက်ကျွန်း), the foreground largest one in the picture above. If we look a little bit further north to the left, there is an isolated small island called 60 Island (၆၀ ကျွန်း), then Tar Yar Island (တာယာကျွန်း) which will be in our tomorrow schedule.

But for today, Captain Moe need to find a proper place for anchoring to shelter overnight at one bay. Finally, we have it when the sun sinks down the horizon.

จากหาดยาว เรือของเราแล่นเลียบชายฝั่งด้านตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของเกาะลาง์ปิ ผ่านเกาะกูและอ์ (ကူလက်ကျွန်း) ที่เห็นใหญ่ที่สุดอยู่ข้างหน้าในรูปข้างบน ถ้ามองขึ้นเหนือถัดขึ้นไปอีกทางซ้ายมือ จะเห็นเกาะโดดเล็กๆ เป็นจุด คือ เกาะ ๖๐ (၆၀ ကျွန်း) และเกาะขนาดย่อมอีกเกาะหนึ่ง คือ เกาะตายา (တာယာကျွန်း) จุดหมายในวันพรุ่งนี้ 

แต่สำหรับวันนี้ โกโม..กัปตัน จะต้องหาจุดทอดสมอหลบคลื่นพักค้างแรมกันที่อ่าวใดอ่าวหนึ่ง กว่าจะได้จุดเหมาะๆ พระอาทิตย์ก็ลาลับขอบฟ้าพอดี

There are many tourist activities on this island since the archipelago was opened in 1997, but most of the island has not yet been thoroughly explored.

I sit listening to many exciting stories of this island at my routine place, the roof-top deck above captain's cabin: Pirates of the Andaman; the transit point of illegal trade from Mandalay, Yangon, Thailand and Malaysia; the military government repression and the naval base settlement; The blind elephant that attacked the villagers then had been killed.

มีกิจกรรมมากมายให้นักท่องเที่ยวได้ทำบนเกาะนี้ ตั้งแต่เปิดหมู่เกาะในปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๐ แต่จนถึงปัจจุบัน พื้นที่ส่วนใหญ่ของเกาะก็ยังไม่ถูกสำรวจ

บนดาดฟ้าเรือเหนือห้องกัปตันที่ประจำ ผมนั่งฟังเรื่องราวน่าตื่นเต้นมากมายเกี่ยวกับเกาะนี้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น เรื่องโจรสลัดแห่งอันดามัน จุดพักสินค้าผิดกฏหมายระหว่างย่างกุ้ง มัณฑะเลย์ ไทย และมาเลเซีย การปราบปรามอย่างเข้มงวดของรัฐบาลทหารและการตั้งฐานทัพเรือ รวมไปถึงช้างป่าตาบอดซึ่งถูกฆ่าตายเพราะลงมาทำร้ายชาวบ้าน

Not only the amazing puddles, this beach also has many puzzling trails in a wavy pattern that look like fish or ..snake scales, not being washed smoothly by waves at low tide like others.

นอกจากแอ่งน้ำมหัศจรรย์เล็กๆ แล้ว หาดทรายนี้ยังมีร่องรอยแปลกตา ลักษณะเป็นลอนริ้วคล้ายเกล็ดปลาหรือ..เกล็ดงู อยู่เต็มไปหมด ไม่ถูกคลื่นซัดแต่งจนเรียบสนิทยามน้ำลงเหมือนหาดอื่นๆ

At the mouth of the stream that flows into the sea, these traces are clearly visible being beautifully sculpted by the flowing water.

But, how about the rest of them which are not at all near the stream, I still can't explain how they have been done?

ตรงปากลำธารที่ไหลลงทะเล ร่องรอยพวกนี้มองเห็นได้ชัดเจนว่า เกิดจากสายน้ำที่ไหลผ่าน แล้วทิ้งรอยไว้เป็นลวดลายอันวิจิตร

แต่รอยมากมายที่ไม่ได้อยู่แถวปากลำธารล่ะ มันเกิดขึ้นมาได้อย่างไร ผมยังหาคำตอบให้ตัวเองไม่ได้

My imagination may be the same fantasy of ancient people, they would explain these traces as the serpent's trails, trails of Naga or big snake, the mythical creature that personifies a big river.

There are many water collections and puddles on this wide sandy beach, some are isolated, some are connected by flow of crystal-clear sea water. 

Immediately, I sink down in one pool with a water flowing, just to be away from those disturbing insects.

บนหาดทรายกว้าง มีแอ่งน้ำเล็กๆ เต็มไปหมด บางแอ่งแยกกัน บางแอ่งมีน้ำทะเลใสแจ๋วไหลเป็นทางต่อเนื่องจากแอ่งหนึ่งไปยังแอ่งถัดไป

ผมทรุดตัวลงแช่ในแอ่งที่มีน้ำไหลรินนั้นทันที  เพื่อหลบภัยแมลง

The gentle touch of soft sand below, the refreshing cool water flowing through the body, the clearer reflection of surroundings when being still and those little ripples fade away,  

looking up ..blue sky, white clouds and warm sun light.

Aw Sa Kar, our lifeboat captain, takes us to the beach in the southwest part of Lampi Island. He leaves his walkie talkie with us to call him when we want to go back later.

This beach is called 254, not an attractive name. I'd like to call it ..Long Beach, because it is the longest one on this island. 

We arrive here during a low tide, so the beach is quite wide and long. No one wants to walk up the she-oak shade afar, just enjoy the sand ..sand and sand now.

ชายหาดนี้มีชื่อว่า หาด 254 ซึ่งฟังดูแล้วไม่ค่อยเชิญชวนให้มาเที่ยวเท่าไร อยากจะเรียกแบบผมเองว่า ..หาดยาว มากกว่า เพราะว่า ที่นี่เป็นชายหาดที่ยาวที่สุดบนเกาะนี้

ช่วงที่เรามาถึงเป็นช่วงน้ำลง จึงมองเห็นหาดทรายโค้งทั้งกว้างและยาวสุดลูกหูลูกตา จนไม่มีใครสักคนคิดจะเดินเข้าไปยังแนวสนตรงหน้า ต่างหาจุดสนใจทำบนหาดนั่นแหละ

There is a sandy beach connected its northern end to a small island called Kulat Island (ကူလက်ကျွန်း).

The southern end of the beach is a river, no ..just a small shallow stream or creek. We can walk along its cool water greeting wild monkeys that come down from the hill on the opposite bank. They look at strangers like us suspiciously.

ด้านเหนือสุดของหาด มีสันทรายเชื่อมต่อไปยังเกาะเล็กๆ ในภาพ คือ เกาะกูและอ์ (ကူလက်ကျွန်း)

ด้านใต้สุดของหาด มีแม่น้ำ ..น่าจะเรียกว่าลำธารเล็กๆ ตื้นๆ ให้เดินลุยน้ำเล่นเย็นๆ ทักทายกับฝูงลิงป่าที่พากันลงมาจากเนินเขาตรงตลิ่งฝั่งตรงข้าม พวกมันจับจ้องดูผู้มาเยือนแปลกหน้าอย่างระแวดระวัง
